At Villa, we take math personally.

The focus is on your child, where instruction is planned according to each student’s individual needs. Developing a growth mindset is a cornerstone of our program, so that all students learn—whatever their skill level—that they can take on new challenges, solve problems and achieve success in math.

Lower School

Working with our dedicated math specialist, teachers regularly assess every student's progress on a continuum of grade level standards. An important aspect of math instruction in the Lower School are small, flexible groupings of students that allow for more personal attention. Taking it a step further, we form even smaller rotations within a group to provide skill-level peers, challenge for math wizards, or the extra help when needed.
We believe that the best learning happens when kids are engaged and having fun. That’s why hands-on activities with math manipulatives, real world problem solving, collaborative learning, and games are always included.

Middle School

Our Middle School math program prepares students for advanced and honors classes in high school. Students are grouped based on a variety of data, including:

  • formative and summative assessments
  • teacher recommendations
  • each student's mathematics background and comfort/confidence level

Villa ’s approach is highly responsive to student needs. Flexibility is key: our students are not “stuck” in a particular track and can move between and among different math groups as they develop, while faculty collaborate to monitor and encourage student progress.

From a high school freshman to her Villa math teacher:
“I just wanted to let you know that today was the first day of math class and it went great! There was only one other freshman besides me. At first, I was a little confused because I forgot some things. But, I looked through the math packet you provided for us at the beginning of the summer and that helped a lot. I just wanted to thank you so much for pushing me in math at Villa because it paid off! Thank you so so so so much.”
