Sleep: Dos and Don'ts of

Healthy Families

As parents, we don't always realize that many of the problems our children face – both academically and socially – may be caused by poor sleep habits.

In this lecture, Ralph Pascualy will help parents learn how to establish healthy sleep habits for their entire family and address the broad range of problems that poor sleep habits may cause. In addition, Pascualy will explain the changing sleep needs of children as they grow.

He has been accredited by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, holds board certifications from the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, and is a clinical assistant professor for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Pascualy is a former recipient of the distinguished William C. Dement Award in Sleep-Disorders Medicine and has spoken and written widely on the topic of sleep disorders. He is co-author of Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Sleep Well, Feel Better (Demos Medical Publishing, Inc., 2000, third edition).

Dmitri Christakis, MD

Taming the Elephant in the Living Room: Make TV Work for Your Kids

In an ever expanding television universe we think we understand what television is, but do we know what is does? Dr Christakis illuminates the contentious issue of how television's messages can be a potentially positive or significantly negative influence at all stages in your child's life

  • Infancy: What are the effects of TV on babies' attention spans and language development?
  • Preschool: What are the effects of TV on children's aggressive and  prosocial behavior?
  • School age: What are the effects of TV on children's weight?
  • Pre-teens and teens: What are the effects of TV on children's risk-taking (e.g alcohol use)?
In each case Dr. Christakis will review what science tells us about television's effects and what parents can do about it. He balances science with good sense and spices it with humor and wisdom. This is the resource you need to help you parent through the ever-growing maze of television options.

Dmitri Christakis, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics, Director of the Child Health Institute at the University of Washington, and a pediatrician at Children's Hospital in Seattle. Dr. Christakis is the author of over 100 original research articles and a textbook of pediatrics. He is also the author of The Elephant in the Living Room: Make Television Work for your Kids. (September 2006; Rodale)

Dr. Christakis' research focuses on the effects of media on child health and development and has been featured on Anderson Cooper 360, the Today Show, ABC, NBC, and CBS news as well as all major national newspapers.
