2017 Auction Fund-a-Need

Let's ACE This!

2017’s Auction Fund-a-Need was about Academics, Communication, and Extracurriculars—ACE, for short! Our goal was to raise a total of $100,000 for three extremely worthy projects:

  • Academics: Transform Villa’s Art Room
  • Communication: Install an Electronic Messaging Center
  • Extracurricular: Upgrade the Rainbow Theater

The work on ACE will be completed summer 2017.

At Villa, art is academic and part of a whole child education. Our art room is one of our most most heavily used classrooms and serves all our students, yet it’s old, worn, and needs better space utilization. Frankly, this project has been on “the list” for three years with John Milroy, Jody Elsner, James Joseph, Kathy Simons and Ryan Erickson all participating in planning. Let’s transform this space from dull and dingy to inspiring!

Components:

  • Refurbish surfaces and repaint the entire room.
  • While the space will flow freely, two “zones” will be created—one for the lower school and one for middle school to better accommodate the differing needs and sizes of these students.
  • Purchase and install “cloverleaf” tables that incorporate project storage for younger students, and adjustable art and activity tables for older students.
  • Purchase and install portfolio cabinets, “tote tray” cabinets, drafting board storage, and stools. Some of this storage can be used to hold various STEAM technology components and “maker” supplies.

Kudos to the VPA for maintaining the announcement sandwich board at the Y in the school driveway. It’s been a great trial run for installing a new electronic LED sign surrounded by a brick housing known as a “monument”.

Why did we need this?

  • You already know it’s been an important additional and EASY way to communicate with all families, but we don’t have enough room. With the new sign, we’ll have greatly expanded messaging space!
  • We can do a variety of messaging, e.g., congratulate our winning teams or welcome visiting students by name.
  • Great aesthetics of a brick “monument” surrounding the sign will give a more professional first impression for our school.
  • It’s so efficient: messaging will be created at a laptop rather than than by VPA volunteers manually affixing messages.

The Rainbow Theater is our most hardworking common space. It’s used by all of our students for school plays, concerts, events like the Italian Dinner, and for offerings like VPA Parent Ed lectures. The sound is sadly lacking and the theater needs to perform more like a theater, rather than just a big room. This upgrade has three components: backstage, the theater itself, and lights/sound.

  • Backstage: Paint, fix sink and replace toilet, install shelving, fix water damage, add more lighting and install rear projection system for backlit sets
  • Theater: Refinish stage floor, replace side/back curtains, automate the front curtain, build new front stairs, enclose dimmer boxes into locked cabinet, install acoustic treatment on the back wall.
  • Sound/Lights: Replace sound board, add center speaker at theater front, mount monitor speakers, replace main cabling, add 20 lavalier microphones (headset type), 4 choir microphones (above) and 3 shotgun microphones (edge of stage and angled toward stage). Theater lights will be converted to LED for efficiency and long life.
