MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS: SCIENCE CASE STUDY

6th Grade Carnivore Ecosystem Exploration

In the spring, the 6th grade students spend three days at the North Cascades Institute Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake to complete the Carnivore Ecosystem Exploration curriculum.

Building on the skills learned in science class, in this field study experience, the students:

  • review the scientific process
  • develop their own unique research question about the carnivore of their choice
  • conduct field tests
  • interpret their results
  • conduct a symposium to share their conclusions

Expanding on the outdoor skills development they acquired in 5th grade, at NCI 6th graders:

  • spend the majority of their time outside hiking on trails
  • live by Leave No Trace principles
  • explore mountain ecosystems first-hand through interdisciplinary activities
