8th Grade Popes and Social Justice Project

Eighth grade humanities classes at Villa integrate history, geography, literature, writing, and religion. Their religious studies focus on service, ethics, and World Religions.

As part of their study of Christianity and Catholicism, eighth graders worked collaboratively in groups to research the importance of each pope’s work with social justice issues and how popes have been influential in creating social change.

The students read encyclicals, identified the social justice issue addressed, and located quotes that speak directly to the issue. They then created life-size portraits of the popes in papal garments.

In the process, students:

  • read primary source documents
  • learned that past church leaders were addressing some of the same issues we are still addressing today
  • explored papal garments
