Thanks to all that purchased a craft item from our seventh grade math entrepreneurs this past Thursday night at the Illuminata. The project was very successful - most groups sold out, and we raised over $650.00!
These authentic projects help students understand real-world math connections and applications. For their stores at Illuminata, each group of students brainstormed and created its own items, decided on price points, marketed, figured out total profits, and reflected upon learning and collaboration. The project also ties to several Common Core standards and 21st Century Learning standards.
All of this money will be used for yet another seventh grade-wide math project this spring. This spring’s project will be STEAM-centric and will focus on improving the Villa campus. Student groups will determine a current need in the building or on the grounds, design a solution, put together a budget and building plans, and actually build solution-oriented items. Last year, student projects included outdoor benches, work on an outdoor covered area, swinging seats on the woods, hand-print canvas decorations, a mural on the covered play area, a garden sanctuary, a new trail in the woods, and a preschool natural play area. We’ll definitely need parent expertise and help for this building project so keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.
