In the critical early years of kindergarten through 2nd grade, the focus is pure and simple: developing a strong foundation to serve the student in the years to come. The emphasis is on reading, writing and math skills, as well as discovering the arts, sciences, and international language. With the sure-footedness that comes from this solid base, students move on to grades 3-5. Here they are challenged to build their knowledge of the world around them, develop critical thinking skills, and stretch their imaginations. These years are about more than simply acquiring information. They’re about analyzing it, synthesizing it and learning to share it with others.

Throughout the Lower School, students work with a home-room teacher for their core curricular subjects: mathematics, reading, writing, religion, social studies, and science. In addition, they attend classes taught by specialists in art, music, physical education, technology, library, and French.

Our specialized teachers work in concert with homeroom teachers to reinforce and expand on what is being taught. This can be as simple as practicing multiplication tables in French — or as orchestrated as extending a Native American social studies unit to art (making a ceremonial mask) and technology (researching and creating a PowerPoint presentation). This level of coordination and integration reinforces and enriches the learning experience beyond measure.

Villa Academy also offers many opportunities for lower school students to complement their academics with enrichment programs in the arts, athletics, clubs, and more. And, VillaCare, the school’s before- and after-school care program, provides opportunities for further creative and academic exploration, recreation, and quiet study.
