In Preschool, we lay the foundation for a lifetime of emotional growth and social connection. We introduce our youngest learners to the world of emotions and relationships through engaging activities that encourage them to express their feelings, share with friends, and navigate simple conflicts with empathy and understanding. Through play-based interactions, our preschoolers begin their journey towards becoming caring and compassionate individuals, well-prepared for the exciting educational adventure ahead.

• Emotional Identification:  Students learn to recognize and express their feelings by beginning to build their emotional literacy.
• Sharing and Turn-Taking: Encouraging students to share toys and take turn during playtime, promoting empathy and cooperation.
• Conflict Resolution: Teachers help students learn basic conflict resolution techniques, such as using words to express feelings and finding compromise.
• Self- Calming Strategies:  Breathing and mindfulness techniques are introduced to help students manage their emotions.

Lower School SEl in the classroom

In the early learning years, we foster a vibrant community where the foundational Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills they have developed in years prior are expanded and interwoven throughout the day. As our students transition to the increased responsibility and expectations of the 3rd - 4th-grade years, they delve deeper into the world of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), which prepares them for the complexities of adolescence and beyond. 

Our students cultivate essential skills like effective communication, friendship-building, and conflict resolution. Their teachers guide them in understanding the value of empathy and respect for diverse perspectives, while also equipping them with tools to manage their own emotions and navigate challenges. By weaving these lessons into their daily experiences, we create a nurturing atmosphere where each child’s unique strengths contribute to a harmonious and inclusive classroom. As a result of nurturing their self-identity and promoting empathy, our students develop strong relationships and a sense of belonging within their community. We provide guidance in handling challenges with resilience, fostering decision-making skills, and embracing diversity, ensuring their foundation is solid for the upcoming middle school years.

Equipped with the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills honed during their Lower School years, we support our Middle School students during this transformative phase. We honor and celebrate the pivotal role Middle School plays in advancing adolescent social-emotional development by providing them with the tools and confidence to navigate these years. Through thought-provoking discussions, service learning experiences, and introspective projects, our comprehensive curriculum guides students in exploring their identities, honing critical thinking, and building resilience.

With a focus on ethical decision-making, digital citizenship, and leadership, our approach prepares middle schoolers to become responsible global citizens. We draw inspiration from Developmental Designs techniques, promoting relationship-based teaching and effective classroom management while guiding students through their transitional years. Our middle schoolers grow in academic excellence, prepared to navigate the complexities of the world with empathy and integrity.

Villa students love being buddies! Every child, from Preschool through 8th grade, participates in our Buddy Program. This cherished tradition intentionally builds connection and community across our student body. Not only are the "big kids" demystified in the eyes of our youngest learners, our older students understand that their buddies look up to them as leaders and mentors.

• Preschool through 3rd-grade students are teamed with older buddies from 4th through 8th grades.
• Buddies meet monthly to engage in connection activities, make art, sit together at assemblies, and participate in celebrations like the Halloween Parade.
• As relationships develop, older students learn to be mentors and younger students feel supported as they grow in confidence.
