We believe that children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lighted. The idea of academic rigor with its connotations of constant test-taking, rote memorization, and endless homework prepares children for the past. At Villa, students work hard because we set the academic bar high, but we believe that children learn best when they are challenged, engaged, and inspired. We provide them with the opportunity to explore real-world issues, think critically, question assumptions, and develop skills for their future academic journeys and beyond.
“As a parent, I love this school for the academics, the values it emphasizes and its vibrant sense of community. But what really makes me thrilled about being at Villa is how much my kids love it. I don't just sense this—they specifically tell me!"
We balance traditional learning with experiential learning to support different aspects of student growth and development. The traditional— math facts, studying greek and latin roots, essay writing, and analyzing primary sources—are important to meet the demands of any future educational setting. The experiential deepens and expands learning and supports students’ social, emotional, and physical development.
Students receive report cards each semester, but it’s important to know that assessment at Villa is ongoing. Teachers provide—through a range of benchmarking tools and standards—thoughtful and timely tracking and feedback on each student’s progress throughout the course of study.
Our instruction, teaching materials, and literature collections exist through a lens of both equity and inclusion. They provide both “mirrors” and “windows” into one’s own experience as well as a view into others’ culture and identity—in school, in the community, and globally.
Our talented teachers continually adjust, develop, and create in their classrooms every day. But we also engage in a formal curricular review process every four years to ensure we’re aligned with current research and best practice.
Academics are of primary importance at Villa, but we go also "beyond the desk" with an experiential education that increases childrens' intrinsic motiviation, deepens learning, and supports their healthy social, emotional, and physical development. And when the school day is over the learning continues with our wide array of after-school activities and enrichment classes.
