You may have seen these recent articles in the Seattle Times and New York Times about science-based reading curricula. According to Teri Rutlege, Villa's Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment,
Villa Academy is "ahead of the reading curve. We began implementing Wired for Reading three years ago for our K-2 students. It's a curriculum derived from, and deeply grounded in, evidence based research."
Villa teachers receive extensive training to understand the research behind the program in order to implement it with fidelity. Wired for Reading employs multi-sensory word analysis that supports reading, writing, and vocabulary development for a wide range of students. In other words, teachers are able to meet students where they are in their reading and language development. From simple letter sounds up through
greek and latin roots, Wired for Reading provides students with a deep understanding of English language structure and phonics. Further, the program is also used as an intervention if early signs of learning challenges are observed. Teri notes that, "Villa has always had a strong reading program. Now, with a research based curriculum, we are excited to see our students' skills grow even more."
